In 1877, a 16-year-old carpenter named Herman F. Wohlsen left Germany and settled in Central Pennsylvania. He began to apply his craft with much success and in 1890, at age 29, he started Wohlsen Construction Company in Lancaster.
Mr. Wohlsen quickly earned a reputation for his efficient work ethic and attention to quality and detail. More than 130 years later, his legacy continues today in a company that has grown to serve the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

Wohlsen Construction began in 1890 as the dream of a single carpenter in Lancaster, PA. In the century-plus since, we have grown into a regional full-service construction firm with an annual volume of $400 million delivered throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Wohlsen operates locally with offices in PA, DE, MD, VA, NJ, and CT, providing seasoned team members with experience delivering projects for more than a dozen unique markets.
Our quality, craftsmanship, and creativity have been honored numerous times since our humble beginnings. Wohlsen has been frequently recognized on both the national and regional levels for excellence in construction by various trade associations, including the DELAWARE CONTRACTOR’S ASSOCIATION; ENR; the former Mid-Atlantic BX; and the ASSOCIATED BUILDERS AND CONTRACTORS (ABC), a national organization consisting of over 25,000 contractors. Since the ABC award program inception in 1990, Wohlsen Construction has received honors regionally over 300 times with 165 Awards of Excellence, 114 Awards of Merit, and 13 LEED/Sustainable Green Awards. Additionally, Wohlsen has been honored 19 times Nationally with 8 Awards of Excellence and 11 Awards of Merit.
